About Our Foundation
Mission of the Foundation is to support initiatives in all spheres of social life targeted at building an open, civil society. The main principle of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan's activities is transparency and openness.
The mission of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan remains the same during 10 years of its operation in Kyrgyzstan.
The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan was opened in the period of dramatic changes for the country, which became a starting point in its new history. Since the beginning in 1993 the Foundation consistently carries out activities in such areas as: mass media, health care, culture, education, science, law, and economic reforms. By facilitating establishment of the infrastructures and institutions necessary for building an open society, during 10 years the Foundation supports civil initiatives in all spheres of social life and thus is moving towards its goal step by step.
For 10 years of operation of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan the country received gratuitous grants for over USD 37 bln. The Foundation has formed a network of the base secondary schools throughout the country. Innovative educational programs and teachers' advanced training resource centers operate in all base schools. More than 500 debate clubs were opened at secondary schools of the country and 15 similar clubs were opened at various Kyrgyz universities.
Scholars, school teachers, university professors, and public servants apprehended open society ideas, discussed the future of their home country and tried to determine new progressive ways of development of Kyrgyzstan at numerous seminars, conferences and round table discussions. Above 3,000 of young Kyrgyz citizens received education at the best world universities; 1,236 teachers attended trainings in innovative teaching methods that develop an independent and critical thinking of students, which is a necessary condition for building an open society in Kyrgyzstan; over 400 titles of humanities textbooks were published. All that was possible due to the financial support of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan.
The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan is active in supporting proposals of NGOs and village administrations that are aimed to solve social, economic and legal problems of the local communities. Economic and Law Information Centers operate in all regions of the country. The Foundation supports initiatives of local government and provides legal, technical and methodological assistance to independent media.
The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan promotes involvement of all strata of the society into the process of making important decisions. The Foundation devises and introduces public policy standards in Kyrgyzstan that are gradually implanted into the decision-making processes. The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan program activities resulted in appearance of bills, program papers in various sectors of economy and social life, and analytical documents that proved the necessity of the made decisions.
The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan fosters health care development. It supported rehabilitation centers for children with mental disabilities. The Foundation promotes development of policy in health care sector. The Foundation runs the following public health programs: Harm Reduction, Mental Health, Health in Prisons, and Women's Health programs. The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan is involved into reforms of penitentiary system, increase of legal literacy of the population, and transformation of law education. There are centers of free legal assistance in all regions of the country that help poor and vulnerable populations. These centers are opened with the financial support of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan.
The Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan facilitates development of institutional mechanisms of protection of women's rights who suffered from violence. Also, it carries out public campaigns and preventive program on the given problem. A network of women's crisis centers was established for victims of violence. The Foundation is working on introduction of gender approaches into the system of secondary education, supports proposals of women's NGOs in gender studies and their efforts on adding gender education to the academic curriculum of educational establishments of the country.
The main principle of the Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan's activities is openness and transparency.
